This project, representing the Armenian scriptoria through modern technologies, has been implemented thanks to the support of the longstanding partner organizations of the Matenadaran, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative.

This interactive map provides opportunity to the visitors of the Matenadaran to get acquainted with Armenian prominent scriptoria, as well as Armenian medieval monasteries and churches and the rich manuscript heritage created there.

This map of Armenian scriptoria is first of all a map of Armenian manuscript art and of Armenian civilization and culture in general. It shows the prevalence of Armenian medieval culture both in Armenia and abroad - in Armenian communities.

Images of maps, monasteries, churches and manuscript pages can be open with just one touch click, providing fast and accessible information and taking the visitors to the world of Armenian manuscripts.

Aurora Humanitarian Initiative

Founded on behalf of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide and in gratitude to their saviors, the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative seeks to empower modern-day saviors to offer life and hope to those in urgent need of basic humanitarian aid anywhere in the world and thus continue the cycle of giving internationally. The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative is Gratitude in Action. It is an eight-year commitment (2015 to 2023, in remembrance of the eight years of the Armenian Genocide 1915-1923) to support people and promote global projects that tackle the needs of the most helpless and destitute and do so at great risk. This is achieved through the Initiative’s various programs: The Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, the Aurora Dialogues, the Aurora Humanitarian Index, the Gratitude Projects and the 100 LIVES Initiative.

Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was created in 1956 in Portugal by the last will and testament of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, a philanthropist of Armenian origin who was born in Istanbul in 1869, and lived in London and Paris during most of his life. He went to Lisbon in 1942, where he died in 1955. At the time of his death, he was the richest man in the world.

Established in perpetuity, the main purpose of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is to improve the quality of life through art, charity, science and education. The Foundation directs its activities from its headquarters in Lisbon. It also has offices in London and Paris. It is one of the ten largest foundations in Europe.

The Foundation has a museum which houses the Founder’s considerable private art collection. It also has a collection of modern and contemporary art; an orchestra and a choir; an art library and archive; a scientific research institute; and extensive gardens in a central part of Lisbon. Its activities range from organising concerts and conferences to giving grants to educational and cultural initiatives.

Since its inception, the Foundation has been supportive of Armenians around the world. It has an Armenian Communities Department which provides university scholarships to Armenian and Armenian studies students, supports research, benefits schools in the diaspora, funds programming on the revitalisation of Western Armenian, gives grants to civil society organisations in Armenia, and encourages Armenian-Turkish dialogue.

Mashtots Armenian Culture Preservation and Development Foundation

Mashtots Armenian Culture Preservation and Development Foundation was founded in 2015 by the sponsorship of Armenian-American philanthropists Maria, Beatriz and Rouben Gheridians.

The Foundation's activities are aimed at the further development of the Matenadaran's educational, scientific and cultural programs, support of young researchers and Ph.D. students, as well as implementation of awareness raising campaigns of the Matenadaran.
